Need to know more about the Russian River, our water source?
If you want to educate yourself, a good place to start is with the group, Russian River Watershed Protection Committee (RRWPC, rrwpc.org).

Here are issues they have been and are working on:
(written by Brenda Adelman, RRWPC Chair, April 2012)

RRWPC has taken the lead on the low flow issue and the Estuary Project. We have filed a lawsuit on the latter because while it is directly connected to low flow, the Water Agency has chosen to divide the two projects in such a way that they avoid looking at water quality issues to result from low flow in the lower part of the river.

We stopped Santa Rosa's proposed sewer outflow at Steelhead Beach where they wanted to discharge up to 60 million gallons a day of treated waste.

We fought Santa Rosa's plans for 25 years to increase discharges into the Russian River. It is partly because of our work that they built the Geysers pipeline.

We have been fighting plans to regionalize the Russian River County Sanitation District without a growth Master Plan for the lower river.

We were part of an effort to force the Sonoma County Water Agency to have their contractors make much greater efforts to conserve water.

We were mainly responsible for getting the Laguna listed as impaired for phosphorus and we are working to get a similar listing for the lower river on nutrients and Ludwigia.

We have been working to raise consciousness on the issue of Endocrine Disrupting chemicals and the great harm they cause to humans and wildlife.

We are currently fighting a new proposed Assembly Bill that would downgrade irrigation practices and legalize "toilet to tap" use of wastewater. Look for articles on this and other issues, on the site (Click on: rrwpc.org. Go to: River Issues>Articles).

Conservation Tips

Indoors
  Find and repair leaks now

  Install high-efficiency toilets

Run the dishwasher and washing machine with full loads only

  Install water- and energy-efficient appliances

  Install low-flow showerheads

Fill the bathtub halfway or less

Turn water off when brushing teeth or shaving

Outdoors
Reduce your watering days to once or twice per week

  Plant native or water-wise species

Inspect and tune up irrigation system monthly

Irrigate between midnight and 6AM to reduce water loss from evaporation and wind

Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveway, deck or patio

Use a bucket and a hose with self-closing nozzle to wash the car or take your car to a carwash that recycles water

Cover pools and hot tubs to reduce evaporation
